Helpful Resources
Below are a few things that you can do as a friend or family member to help your loved one. You can also view our list of current groups and see if one might fit your situation.
- Get Information: If you suspect someone you care about has an eating disorder, learn as much as you can. Resources: library, bookstore, Internet, Trish Stanley & Associates-Referral Network.
- Express Concern: Talk with the person by saying, "I'm concerned that you may have an eating disorder. I have noticed _____________, and we need to talk about it."
- Offer Support: Encourage the person to talk about the problem. Avoid criticizing, judging, nagging, or blaming.
- Know Your Limits: You cannot force a person to stop her/his behavior. However, you can encourage someone to seek help. If the individual is a minor she/he will require more direct intervention.
- Seek Help: Understand that eating disorders are complex and that recovery is a difficult process. It is important to contact an experienced eating disorder professional. Members of Trish Stanley & Associates-Referral Network are available to answer questions and provide referrals.
